How to help a child struggling with poor focus?
You may have come across children who are fidgeting in the classroom when assigned tasks that are repetitive and boring but successfully completing even very challenging tasks that require more attention and effort.? They may be the ones who are labeled as troublemakers in the classroom. These inattentive children are often mistaken for lack of motivation and laziness.
What are the three main symptoms of ADHD in children?
1)Hyperactivity
2)impulsivity
3) Poor focus or distractibility
Poor focus or distraction
This is one of the key problems children with ADHD face. This results when the frontal cortex of the brain is in an inactive state, blocking the entry of stimuli like dopamine, which are helpful in keeping attention and remaining motivated by the task at hand.
Here are some strategies suggested by experts in the field to overcome unpleasant situations created due to an inability to focus.
1. Keeping a to-do list and a master to-do list
Having two separate to-do lists for short-term and long-term goals helps to accomplish more tasks while reaching long-term goals without much difficulty. This is mainly helpful in keeping track of all the activities without being overwhelmed.
2.Visualizing it
Sitting down for a few minutes with the list they prepared each morning and doing a “dry run" in their head, visualizing the tasks they are going to do during the day, will help them stay focused on what is important and avoid distractions.
3.chunking
Breaking down large, long-term tasks into more manageable pieces helps to complete them more efficiently, and even celebrating the small wins can keep them motivated.
4. Keeping distractions to a minimum
These distractible children tend to jump from one activity to another and from one thought to another after getting distracted by external stimuli like ringing phones, music, or maybe pictures on walls. So it is important to create a distraction-free environment when they work.
